Maya Mopan now has a police precinct of its own

The residents of the Maya Mopan area in Belmopan City will now be better able to sleep in peace after the installation of a police precinct in the community. At the end of last year, four persons were shot and killed in the area. The incidents left residents in a state of shock and led to a peace march being held in the days following. Today, the Belmopan Area Representative Oscar Mira, the Belmopan City Council, the Belize Police Department, and the Reconstruction and Development Corporation (Recondev) held an opening ceremony for the Maya Mopan Police Precinct. Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, says that the booth will not only boost citizen security in the area but provide the residents with peace of mind.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Rightly said. Having a precinct in the Maya Mopan area is long overdue. The Belmopan area has expanded exponentially and so having one central police location in Belmopan certainly is not appropriate for us to be able to meet the policing demands for the people of Belmopan. So decentralizing our services by having one precinct here is going to bring much comfort to the residents of both Belmopan, Maya Mopan, Salvapan as well as Las Flores Community. So we’re grateful for this opportunity to be able to serve more closely with the people of Maya Mopan and Salvapan. We have ensure that we have an adequate compliment of officers to work within the precinct so with that we should not have the difficulty of finding the place closed unless the officers would be responding to a report within the neighborhood then certainly there might be a need to close the station for about a couple of minutes nad I am sure that when that does occur the public is going to understand. Later on down the road we’ll look at the graduation of the recruit squad that is in training we’ll add an additional ten police officers to this precinct. Now once we add the additional ten there will be no circumstances under which the place can be closed ,it will have to remain open 24/7 because they’ll have the man power to be able to have officers at the station while others are patrolling on the ground.”
