National Celebrations Calendar Launched for Belize

The National Celebrations Commission has launched the official calendar of events.  The National Institute for Culture and History (NICH) forms a part of the Commission and was instrumental in coordinating events with municipalities countrywide. Kim Vasquez, the Director of the Institute of Creative Arts and NICH representative on the Celebrations Commission, said that work on the calendar began back in April, with the aim of getting it out to Belizeans on time. She highlighted some of the major events on this year’s calendar.

Kim Vasquez, Director, NICH: “I don’t want to give the impression that everything is happening in Belize City, definitely not. Each municipality has a really nice calendar of events. And what I’ve been saying is that what is really encouraging this year is that we see not only festivities and things to celebrate and party but we see things that are educational, things that are of supporting entrepreneurship and business development. The main one, of course, being the Expo. We can look forward to the Expo as well. But yes, each municipality has lectures, they have things in the arts. There are a couple of mural activities taking place. So we encourage everybody at home and abroad, if you’re abroad and you want to come home head on home for the celebrations this year. There is an exciting calendar of activities. It’s available for download. You can pick up an electronic copy by downloading one or you can visit the Bliss Centre for the Performing Arts or the NICH administration building in Belmopan or in Belize City to pick up your playbill.”

The calendar is available to download at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology’s website. Vasquez said that printed copies can be picked up at NICH offices in Belize City and Belmopan. National Celebrations began on August 1 with the celebration of Emancipation Day. The last event, the Corozal at 42 concert, will be held on September 30th.
