New Carnival Road March Route to be Finalized Soon, Aims for Enhanced Safety

The Belize Carnival Association is expected to finalize the new route for this year’s Carnival Road March next week. The association has completed a dry run of the new route from Memorial Park to Marion Jones Stadium. The change is centered on improving the safety of the event for both participants and spectators. According to Chairman of the National Celebrations Commission Francis Fonseca, an official release on the change will be released soon.

Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education: “I think so, I think pretty much we’ll make an official announcement I think within the next few days. But based on the report I have received from the Carnival Association and my team who have been working together from the NCC, they have agreed that the new Carnival route,  I have to say route because Mr. Vernon message me to say, don’t say route, say route. That’s the correct word. So route is the correct word. My understanding is that the new route will be from the Baron Bliss area all the way straight to Marion Jones. So I think that my view is I’ve always supported that. I think that will be a fantastic route. And I think the Belizean people will enjoy a wonderful carnival.”

Last year, the event was riddled with fights and confrontations between revelers and police.
