Opposition Alleges Misuse of Police Power in ComPol’s Brother’s Arrest

The Opposition is accusing the Commissioner of Police Chester Williams of using the department to resolve personal matters. Today, the Leader of the United Democratic Party Moses Barrow asserted that he believes the arrest and charge of the commissioner’s brother, Arthur Roy Williams, is a miscarriage of justice. In February, Roy Williams was criminally charged over statements he made on Facebook about Commissioner Williams and the Police Department. He was ordered to refrain from posting on social media regarding the police department or the commissioner, but last week, Williams allegedly breached the court order. The ComPol stated that the charges stemmed from a post his brother made following the shooting of his home. Today, Barrow argued that the younger Williams’ statements were vague and taken out of context.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “The commissioner likes to talk about the UDP not having its house in order. Well, when you reach to a point where you’re sending the police to arrest and charge and lock up your own brother for expressing his opinions on matters that I think he would know about in Stann Creek West and wherever else. And recently Arthur Williams made an ambiguous comment and he was dragged back before the court and it is alarming. You hear about how the ComPol talks about me and how he chastise me. Isn’t that considered cyberbullying? And then when I lash back at him, I don’t do it with any malice I just deal with the facts and deal with the statistics. So what now ? I’m going to press charges for them to cyberbullying and then him likewise? How is he applying his power and his discretion when he’s turning a family dispute into a criminal matter, whereas before defamation and if you abuse your freedom of speech that was a civil matter. If someone has said something against you that was defamatory you could go to the courts in the civil jurisdiction but now we have criminalized it so that the ComPol doesn’t get criticized. Like, where are we as a nation?”

Barrow says he attempted to hire an attorney for Williams, but no one wanted to take the case.
