PUP Begins Vetting Candidates for Municipal Elections

PUP Chairman Henry Usher confirmed on Saturday that the party has begun vetting applicants who are seeking to represent the PUP in the upcoming municipal elections.  Usher says the process is now underway as the party works to identify candidates for the various town and city councils. The vetting exercise is expected to assess prospective candidates before the party moves into the next stage of selecting its municipal slates.

Henry Charles Usher, PUP Chairman: “Currently the party is in the process of vetting these candidates, of determining if they are going to have contested conventions or endorsement conventions in the municipalities. That work is almost complete and then of course it will be turned over to the National Executive for final determination. So the party continues to work. The party has gotten 115 applicants countrywide. 115 applicants for all nine municipalities, 15 for the nine mayoral positions and 100 for the 58 city council and town council positions. This shows that the party continues to attract the best and the brightest in our country. Ladies and gentlemen, I’m happy to report party leader, I’m happy to report that the party is ready, the party is gearing up and the party will deliver in March of 2027.”

Usher’s report came during the PUP’s National Party Council in Dangriga.  At that very event, the party approved three resolutions.  One had to do with the party’s support for the people of Venezuela as they continue to face a period of crisis. PUP Chairman Henry Usher says the resolution reflects the party’s position of solidarity.  The People’s United Party has also ratified its support for the Partial Scope Agreement between Belize and El Salvador.  PUP Chairman Henry Usher says the agreement can help strengthen the working relationship between the two countries while opening new possibilities for Belizean businesses.

Henry Charles Usher, PUP Chairman: “This process started, I believe, in August of 2024. And July 2nd, Thursday, two days ago, less than two years later, the partial scope agreement with El Salvador has been signed. Congratulations to the work being done in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, and of course, the work being done in the Ministry of Agriculture. And we have to highlight the driving force behind this. the person who really pushed this initiative. The Honorable Abelardo Mai, please give him a big round of applause for being the driving force behind this partial scope agreement with El Salvador.”

The third resolution had to do with the inclusivity of young persons and women for the upcoming municipals next year.
