Senate Reviews Amendment to Criminal Code on HIV Transmission from Mother to Child
The section of the Criminal Code that relates to HIV transmission from mother to child that is being amended, made its way to the Senate yesterday. It is an amendment that did not encounter much opposition, but rather, Senators gave their thoughts on the national HIV/AIDS situation in the country. Lead Opposition Senator, Michael Peyrefitte, spoke on several reservations he had with this change in legislation.
Senator Janelle Chanona representing the non-governmental organizations also rose on the issue of HIV/AIDS, saying that while they support the amendments, they are hoping that education, particularly, among the young population would be given some attention.
Other issues discussed in yesterday’s Senate sitting was the Loan Motion for the STEAM Academy, and the current energy woes at the Belize Electricity Limited.
