UDP Declares Crime a National Crisis, Urges Immediate Action

Meanwhile, the United Democratic Party is calling on the Briceño administration to treat crime as a full-blown national crisis.  In a statement issued today under the headline “A Nation in Crisis, A Nation Under Siege,” Opposition Leader Tracy Taegar-Panton said the latest bloodshed demonstrates that Belize can no longer ignore the country’s deteriorating security situation. The UDP is urging Prime Minister John Briceño and his Cabinet to take immediate action, saying Belize needs decisive leadership within the Belize Police Department and a clear demonstration that the government recognizes the seriousness of the country’s crime problem.  The statement notes that crime transcends politics, emphasizing that “the bullets do not ask whether someone is PUP or UDP, rich or poor, black or white, young or old,” adding that no Belizean is immune from the violence affecting communities across the country.  While criticizing the government’s handling of public safety, the opposition also pledged its support for meaningful anti-crime initiatives. The UDP says it stands ready to work with the government on genuine efforts aimed at strengthening law enforcement, restoring public confidence in the police, protecting Belizean lives, and bringing peace back to the nation’s streets.  The party went on to argue that Belize cannot continue to accept murder as “the new normal,” accusing the government of being out of touch with the hardships facing ordinary Belizeans and of focusing on protecting what it described as the interests of a favored few instead of addressing the country’s growing security concerns.  The statement concludes by extending condolences to the families of the victims and calling on the government to make the fight against crime and violence its highest national priority.
