Belize Introduces Electric Buses in Bid to Modernize Transport Sector

After almost two years of launching its e-mobility pilot project, the government will place five electric buses on roads across the country this week. Today, the first of the fleet arrived in the country via the Western Border. The pilot project seeks to probe into the viability of Belize’s electric vehicle market and is expected to aid in the government’s venture to modernize the transport sector. The first bus will be placed in Belize City, and according to Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner, it will have state-of-the-art amenities. Our newsroom caught up with Wagner this evening and got his take on the project.

The project is being funded by the European Union through the United Nations Development Programme. UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Ian King spoke about how the project came to fruition and its expected impacts.

Chinese company, Build Your Dreams (BYD), was selected to supply the first two electric buses for the one-year pilot project.
