House Meeting Post-Election: Quiet Opposition, Boastful Government

Today’s House Meeting lasted for about three hours, and surprisingly, there wasn’t much fireworks.  The opposition was very much tamed and quiet.  Some would say it had to do with the massive loss they had at the polls on Wednesday.  The government side was quite boastful of their recent wins, and they did try to egg on the opposition side, but only the Leader of the Opposition took the bait.  Here is a snippet of two exchanges, in particular.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “You really don’t want to start me up right now Leader of the Opposition. Yes. I think Madam Speaker the Honorable Member from Freetown said it best we need to do to the Leader of the Opposition what the people of this country did, they ignored him, so I will continue to ignore him. You can’t take away zero from zero so you never lost anything. He can’t even count he was talking about nine that he would win, nine municipalities, you didn’t even win nine seats much less nine municipalities. Anyway let me move on. And we recommit that early next year because of the twelve million dollars in profits from “Fu Wi Boledo”, the entire Cayo district will see the rollout of the National Health Insurance thanks to this PUP administration. Check the math, twelves times ten that’s a hundred and twenty million dollars the prince was making you know ? The first ten years and he expected to make another hundred and twenty million. Member for Mesop. you didn’t get some of that hundred and twenty million for your campaign ? He never got it. Take your beating like a man. Be man.”

Today’s House Meeting saw government CEOs along with the recently elected Mayors present in the gallery.
