Easter Weekend Swim Turns Tragic: Two Lives Lost in Blackman Eddy Village

What was to be a friendly swimming race in Blackman Eddy Village, Cayo District ended in two people losing their lives on Sunday. According to police, around 3:00 p.m. Esau Castillo and Eduardo Garcia were swimming under the Iguana Creek Bridge when they decided to race. However, while the two were swimming, Castillo went underwater and did not resurface. Shortly after Garcia also went underwater and did not resurface, prompting the resident to call for help. Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero says police and rescue personnel from Spanish Lookout attempted to save the men, but their efforts were fruitless.

ACP Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding, Eastern Division: “Police responded to reports of a drowning at Iguana Creek Bridge in the Cayo district. Upon arrival they found somebody reported that two persons were swimming and they went under and had not resurfaced. Searches were done where the lifeless bodies of Edwardo Martinez and Esau Castillo were found. Information is that they were both swimming in the area when they went under and did not resurface. Both bodies were retrieved and were taken to the morgue and now await a post mortem examination. No injuries were observed on the bodies.”

Our newsroom understands that Garcia was visiting from Guatemala.
