The Ministry of Transport may be looking to increase their efforts after receiving a donation of traffic equipment. Yesterday, the Second Road Safety Project handed over much-needed equipment to the Department of Transport (DoT) and the Police Traffic Unit. The equipment gifted to the DoT includes, among other items, handheld radios, flashlights, handcuffs, retractable speed bumps, first-aid kits, checkpoint signs, and binoculars. Deputy chief Transport officer, Peter Williams says that the equipment will benefit the department in safety for road users and the transport officers.

Peter Williams, Deputy Chief Transport Officer: “This donation that we had received has been in the making for about two and a half years now. I want to thank the Second Road Safety Project, the entire team under that project, I want to thank CDB. There has been a lot of effort that has gone into procuring these items. Firstly identifying the items, procuring them and now distributing them to our officers here today. These equipment will benefit the department in improving the safety not only for road users but for our officers as well. The safety of our officers is paramount and so having these equipment such as the reflective cones, the reflective vests, the flashlights, the caps, all these things will help to boost the morale of our officers and will add to the safety of our officers at the end of the day. And it also benefits the commuters because they will now be able to better identify our officers because often times we hear of complaints of persons who are conducting illegal vehicle checkpoints and so with these equipments our officers can be better identified in their capacity as such.”
The Second Road Safety Project is being executed through the Ministry of Economic Development with loan funding from the Caribbean Development Bank.
