The Millennium Change Corporation (MCC) has approved a 125-million-dollar grant for Belize. Last week, a team of government representatives met with a team from the MCC to finalize the negotiations surrounding the grant. The money will be used to enhance the country’s education and energy sector. Belize gained eligibility back in 2023 and expects to implement projects geared at reducing poverty and growing the economy. Today, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Economic Development, Dr. Osmond Martinez, spoke about how the negotiations were finalized and how it resulted in Belize gaining access to millions of dollars.

Dr.Osmond Martinez, CEO, Ministry of Economic Development: “It was a three days intensive negotiations where the negotiations were led by Minister Coye and myself with the support of the attorney generals and his team. We also had the CEO of Education and the CEO of Energy and their teams who supported us on those negotiations. And I’m happy to say that the negotiations were successful. So Belize will definitely be eligible, is eligible now and will receive $125 million US dollars as a grant or 250 million Belize dollars as a grant which I think is the biggest, historically is the largest grant that Belize have ever received.”
The delegation was led by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Christopher Coye.
