Belize Faces Energy Challenges as Electricity Supply Tightens; Eyes MCC Funding

The finalization of the MCC Compact Agreement comes at a time when Belize is facing issues in the energy sector.  Last week, Belize Electricity Limited announced that its Mexican power supplier would be cutting back on certain occasions due to an increased demand in Mexico. The company says that Mexico, similar to Belize, needs more electricity as climate change and an uptick in tourism numbers is demanding more energy. Chief Executive Officer for Economic Development, Dr. Osmond Martinez, says that the government is aware of the issue and hopes to utilize funding from the MCC to bolster the country’s energy sector.

Twenty percent of the funds will be used specifically for investment in the energy sector.
