The United Democratic Party (UDP) has registered its objections on the salary cuts of some soldiers in the Belize Defence Force. The opposition issued a release this morning saying that if the government goes through with this exercise it would be, ‘a grave mistake that will demoralize our military and undermine our national security.’ It furthered its statement by saying that the morale in the force is already at an all-time low, especially after provisions were recently cut, which the government has since denied. The release closed by stating, quote, “the United Democratic Party warns the Briceno Administration that a demoralized military will pose a threat to our National Security and undermine the fight against transnational crimes. We advise the government to refrain from cutting salary increases given by former Prime Minister Barrow and the UDP Government. We call on the labour unions and all stakeholders to support our men and women in uniform.” End of quote.
