A power struggle may be brewing in San Pedro after the island’s Mayor, Gualberto Nunez, announced that he will take a shot at his political boss, Belize Rural South Area Representative Andre Perez. The two-time mayor took to Facebook this weekend and stated, quote, “The people of San Pedro and Caye Caulker have been asking for quite some time now if I will represent them in the General elections. Well, this is a testament that I will be sending in my application to represent you all! Let democracy prevail.” End of quote. Nunez’s announcement follows the People’s United Party’s National Executive stating that the window of application for aspiring standard bearers was opened last Friday and closes on May 24. However, the party has yet to state whether there will be any endorsements and says those decisions will be made after the deadline. So will the announcement ruffle feathers in the party and create a divide between the two, who have been known to have a rocky relationship? We’ll have to wait and see. Our newsroom made multiple attempts to reach Nunez, but up to news time, our calls and messages remained unanswered. We did manage to speak to Perez, who stated that the best persons to comment were Nunez and the PUP’s Chairman, Henry Charles Usher.
