Two members of the Senate returned to the country this week after attending a two-day parliamentary conference in Miami, USA. President of the Senate Carolyn Trench Sandiford and Senator Isabell Bennett-Moody attended the conference on using technology to drive development in the region, which was held on September 7 and 8. They joined representatives from thirteen Caribbean countries to discuss strategies to advance digital transformation in the Caribbean by sharing global best practices. Speaking on the experience Senator Bennett-Moody said that countries need to pass laws that will enable their citizens to be able to take advantage of opportunities that exist to generate income through the use of technology.
Following their trip, the delegation will table a report to be discussed with the remainder of the Senate. Senator Bennett-Moody noted that Belize has passed several digital inclusion laws in the past four years.
The conference was held under the theme “The Role of Parliaments in Transforming Digital Economies in the Caribbean.” The Belizean delegation returned home on Monday.
