The People’s United Party (PUP) will celebrate its 74th birthday this weekend. On Saturday, the PUP will hold a National Party Council (NPC) meeting in Belize City to commemorate the milestone and to conduct party business. Since the political movement was founded by the Right Honourable George Cadle Price on September 29, it has seen major changes. Party Chairman, Henry Charles Usher, explained the significance of the party’s longevity and how they plan to celebrate.

Henry Charles Usher, PUP Chairman: “The party is celebrating it’s 74th anniversary, 74th birthday this Sunday the 29th of September but we’re having our national party council on Saturday on the 28th and it’s more of a celebratory event to celebrate the party’s birthday. Moving into our 75th year next year and so we want to have a series of lectures, different events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the party and to also update our if you remember the 50th anniversary we had brought out a book, a historical booklet on the People’s United Party twenty five years ago in the year 2000 and we want to update that booklet for the work that we’ve done over the past 25 years as we enter year 75 and I think that’s something very important. It’ll be a good year for the party. We have elections in our 75th year as well. We’re expecting to win those elections and so that will form part of the booklet that’s coming out. But really what we also have this weekend is the introduction to the public of our team 31. If you remember the Prime Minister, our party leader, gave us instructions to have everybody in place and he had said by the end of August but really it was so that we could have everybody in place for the party’s birthday and we will have team 31 in place. We will have an individual that will be contesting …… that is the only seat remaining but we should have somebody in place so we will have somebody in place by Saturday endorsed by the people of Collet.”
The party’s commander-in-chief, Prime Minister John Briceno, is currently out of the country with a scheduled return for tomorrow.
