The People’s United Party, Belize’s oldest political entity, celebrated its 74th anniversary over the weekend. To celebrate, the PUP held a National Party Council Meeting at the St. Catherine’s Academy Auditorium, on Saturday. The event brought together long-standing members of the PUP and political newcomers to honor the party’s rich history and conduct party business in preparation for what lies ahead. During his address, Party Leader John Briceno, focused on the party’s history, and contributions of the founders of the party.

John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “And today, today we’re gathered to celebrate 74 years of service to the people of this country. The People’s United Party started in 1950 and today the PUP is stronger than ever, united as ever, prepared to fight as ever and the People’s United Party is ready for the next election. PUP ! So we celebrate. Today we celebrate the birthday of the People’s United Party and as we do every single year it is a time for us to reaffirm our commitment to serve the people. We also gather to remember that we stand on the shoulders of giants. Those who dared to dream of this nation when others were saying it cannot be done. We stand on the shoulders of those who left us with a philosophy, or a PUP creed that says we must work to build a Belizean society that is rooted in social justice, equality and defend the principle that this People’s United Party belongs to all of us.”
During the NPC meeting, the party also presented awards to delegates to honor their years of service to the party. Deputy Party Leader Cordel Hyde, focused his address on paying respect to the people who carry the party by doing the leg work. \
During the NPC meeting, Briceno also took a jab at the opposition saying that the could not, in their current state, hold a gathering to show a unified party.
