The Government of Belize has partnered with the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center (5C’s) to improve the water system on Ambergris Caye and the island’s resiliency to climate change. Today, the parties signed a memorandum of understanding to commence the groundwork for the Building Climate Resilience into the Water and Wastewater Systems of Ambergris Caye project. The venture seeks to assist the Belize Water Services (BWS) in enhancing access to potable water in the rapidly expanding municipality and strengthen its ability to adapt to climate change. This morning at the signing ceremony, Area Representative for Belize Rural South Andre Perez spoke on the project’s expected impact, particularly on the island’s new communities.
The project is expected to commence in 2027 and will be funded by a grant from the Green Climate Fund. Executive Director of the Regional Body Dr. Colin Young says it will not only uplift the lives of residents on the island but help in further reducing Belize’s carbon footprint.
