It’s been over two weeks since Tropical Storm Sara hit Belize, but the storm’s impacts continue to be felt in the rural Belize District. The weather system had brought persistent rains that first flooded communities in the Cayo District. And later, inundated roads, bridges, and homes in several communities in the Rural Belize District. Since then, the floodwaters have remained stagnant in villages like Lords Bank, Western Paradise, and Gales Point Manatee. Today, the Area Representative for Belize Rural Central Dolores Balderamos Garcia provided an update on the situation and what is being done to assist impacted persons.

Dolores Balderamos Garcia, Minster of Human Development: “As the Belize Rural Central representative, we have been out there, we have been on the ground, we have delivered food packages and also cleaning supplies packages, and the water is still high in the Lord’s Bank area, also to an extent Sunset Park and Westlake and Western Pines. So those communities near the John Smith Road, but also… coming down the Belize River in Lords Bank and we will continue to reach out to all our people. Now when the waters recede, when the flood waters recede, we will have to look at those affected in terms of their homes because there may be water damage, there may be need for further building materials, etc. And I do want to say that not only the ministry but myself as area rep, we will continue to reach out and make sure that we give the response that is necessary.”
The National Emergency Management Organization remains on the ground in various communities conducting damage assessment reports
