New Hospital and NHI Expansion Coming to Belmopan

During the 2025 Budget Debate, Area Representative for Belmopan, Oscar Mira, announced advancements in healthcare for the capital city via the National Health Insurance (NHI) program and the construction of a new hospital. The NHI program, designed to provide affordable and accessible healthcare services, is set to expand to Belmopan as part of the government’s nationwide rollout. Recently, Minister of Health and Wellness, Kevin Bernard, indicated that the Cayo District, including Belmopan, is targeted for NHI implementation by mid-2025, with the goal of achieving full national coverage by the end of the year. Mira confirmed that this is to be in full effect sooner than residents may think.

Oscar Mira, Belmopan Area Representative: “For decades families in Belmopan have been waiting to be included in the national insurance program, health insurance program. Well this year it is going to happen. Thanks to this administration over 93,000 residents of the Cayo district and this includes Belmopan will now be covered under NHI. This is a big thing. It is a huge thing. How many requests do we always get for assistance for health, assistance for hospital ? Every time I go to the office I have a whole amount of requests but we didn’t just stop at this policy we are now laying the groundwork for a brand new tertiary level hospital in Belmopan. This facility will serve as the cornerstone for healthcare delivery for both the central region and the southern region.”

The NHI scheme offers a range of services, including general medical consultations, diagnostics, maternal and child health services, and management of chronic illnesses, all aimed at ensuring comprehensive primary healthcare for Belizeans.  Complementing the NHI expansion, the government plans to construct a new hospital in Belmopan. This initiative aligns with the healthcare policy outlined in Plan Belize, which emphasizes upgrading health facilities and expanding services to meet the growing needs of the population.
