The University of Belize (UB) today announced the immediate termination of Dr. Pio Saqui, a faculty member, following a formal investigation into allegations of professional misconduct. The University affirmed its unwavering commitment to providing a safe, respectful, and accountable academic environment for all students, faculty, and staff. The decision comes after the University received formal complaints in early April, alleging professional misconduct by Dr. Saqui. In response, UB initiated a formal investigation conducted by an independent Ad Hoc Committee. This Committee carried out a comprehensive and impartial review of the allegations, which included interviews and evidence-gathering, all in strict accordance with the University’s established policies. The Committee’s findings were submitted to the Office of the President and subsequently reviewed by independent legal counsel. After careful consideration of both the Committee’s report and the legal opinion, the University concluded that the conduct constituted “gross misconduct,” as defined in its Faculty and Staff Handbook and under the Belize Labour Act. Dr. Vincent Palacio, President of the University of Belize, made a statement assuring students and parents that the university holds its faculty and staff to the highest professional and ethical standards, and will not tolerate conduct that undermines the safety, dignity, or trust of our academic community. According to the University of Belize, the action taken is consistent with its disciplinary procedures and legal obligations. To protect the confidentiality of all individuals involved, the University stated that no further details regarding the matter will be disclosed at this time.
