Cabinet Withholds Position as BTL Briefs Ministers on Speednet Acquisition

Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) made a formal presentation to Cabinet today on its proposed acquisition of Speednet; a continuation of consultations with key stakeholders.  According to the Government of Belize Press Office, the Cabinet presentation follows earlier briefings held with the Social Security Board, the Belize Communications Workers’ Union, the executive committee of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB), and other interested parties.  Cabinet has indicated that it will withhold its official position on the proposed acquisition until BTL completes its ongoing round of consultations. Government officials say the process is intended to allow for broad stakeholder engagement before any final decision or public stance is taken.  The proposed acquisition has generated national interest, given its potential implications for the telecommunications sector, competition, and public investment. Cabinet says it will make its position known once the consultation process has concluded.
