Members of the House of Representatives will convene tomorrow morning at the National Assembly in Belmopan with a packed legislative agenda that focuses heavily on public safety, labour protections, and public health reforms. Among the key matters before the House is the introduction of amendments to Belize’s traffic and insurance laws aimed at strengthening enforcement on the nation’s roads. Lawmakers will debate proposals to expand the powers of traffic wardens, allowing them to enforce motor vehicle insurance regulations and require drivers to produce valid insurance certificates. The amendments would also increase penalties for motorists operating vehicles without insurance. The sitting will also move forward with the Occupational Safety and Health Bill, 2025, which seeks to establish a national inspectorate and advisory committee to improve workplace standards and clarify responsibilities for employers and workers. The legislation would modernize labour protections and replace the existing Factories Act. Public health measures will feature prominently as well, with the Tobacco Control Bill, 2025 set for further consideration. The proposed law aligns Belize with international standards and aims to protect the public, particularly children and workers, from exposure to tobacco smoke while increasing awareness of health risks. Additionally, the House is expected to receive several regulatory updates, including multiple amendments to price control regulations and the Gaming and Lotteries Control Bill brought from the Senate. The meeting begins at 10:00 a.m., with prayers, announcements, and ministerial statements scheduled before debate on the legislation gets underway.
