Anti-Money Laundering Conference Kicks Off in Belize City

Over the next three two days, various organizations involved in the national response to financial crimes will be meeting in Belize City. The second-annual Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Conference, kicked off this morning at the Ramada Princess Hotel. The National Anti-Money Laundering Committee is hosting the event in collaboration with the United States Embassy and the University of Belize. The conference is one of the ways Belize shows its efforts to comply with international regulations to avoid de-rising, a situation where international banks refuse to do business with clients believed to be involved in illicit activities. Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit, Leni Ysaguirre McGann, said that there are over five hundred participants attending the conference in person and virtually.

Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa says that the conference shows Belize’s commitment to combatting financial crimes. He said that the country has been making great strides to ensure compliance.

The conference features a diverse group of local and international presenters as well as breakout sessions on several issues.
