Belize and the IDB Launch Program to Boost Jobs and Workforce Skills

The Government of Belize and the Inter-American Development Bank yesterday signed an agreement launching the BL-L1050 Program to Improve Labor Force Participation and Employability in Belize during a ceremony held at Belize Sugar Industries in Orange Walk.  According to the IDB, the initiative aims to equip Belizean workers with the skills and capabilities needed to compete more effectively in the labour market while helping families access stronger and more stable income-earning opportunities. The program is also intended to build a more resilient and future-ready workforce across the country.  Officials explained that the project will focus on strengthening employability through training, workforce readiness, and expanded participation in economic activity, particularly for groups that traditionally face barriers entering the job market.  Following the signing ceremony, the visiting delegation toured key areas in Orange Walk Town identified for potential redevelopment under the Sustainable and Inclusive Urban Development Program. The group visited the market area on Arthur Street, Independence Plaza, and Philip Alvarez Park, where proposed upgrades are expected to improve economic activity, public spaces, and community use.
