Belize has intensified its national tsunami preparedness through a comprehensive five-day initiative led by the International Tsunami Information Center for the Caribbean (ITIC-CAR). From January 26-30, 2026, international experts collaborated with national bodies, including the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) and the National Meteorological Service, to conduct technical training, review standard operating procedures, and enhance tsunami warning capabilities. The program focused on integrating Pacific Tsunami Warning products and refining national response plans to better prepare for potential tsunami events. The initiative extended beyond the capital, with significant community outreach in vulnerable coastal areas such as Placencia, Hopkins, and Gales Point. Engagement with local Village Emergency Committees aimed to strengthen grassroots awareness and coordination. Hon. Henry Charles Usher, Minister of the Public Service and Disaster Risk Management, highlighted the effort’s importance, noting the commitment to “protecting lives and building a safer Belize for everyone.” This push under the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme shows Belize’s dedication to not only meeting international risk-reduction standards but also ensuring that its coastal communities are equipped to respond effectively to emergencies.
