The Regent Street Parking lot located next to the Treasury Building is officially being named in honor of the late former Belize City Mayor, William David Fonseca. The current mayor, Bernard Wagner confirmed the initiative this morning during the first in a series of talks shows piloted by the Belize City Council.
Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City: “As you know David was a previous mayor. Actually he was the first mayor that was elected by the people. The previous mayors were really elected from out of caucus, out of the group of councilors and so he was the first mayor to be elected by the council and so we want to be able to honor him in that space.”
In 1988, David entered electoral politics as a Belize City Councilor candidate on the People’s United Party slate. He was elected and would eventually serve three terms as Mayor of Belize City, making history as the first directly elected Mayor. Mayor Fonseca had passed away on April 30, 2015 in his Belize City home.
