Belize City man killed inside his home

A man was killed inside the comfort of his home early this morning in Belize City. Around 1:45 am, 30-year-old Lindon Hinds and his common-law wife were sleeping inside their Pitter Street home when someone knocked on their door and shouted “police”. Hinds then got up and open the door to see who it was. That’s when the gunman opened fire. He was transported to the KHMH where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Hinds was a known gang member. According to Police Press Officer, ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, the police have ramped up presence in the area to prevent retaliatory violence.

ASP. Fitzroy Yearwood, Public Relations, Belize Police Department: “Police visited a scene at #11 Peters St where upon entering a wooden home, wooden structure home, they saw the body of Lindon Hinds 30 years with apparent gunshot wounds. Initial investigation revealed that Mister Hinds was at home when he heard shouting and knocking on his front door, a voice saying “Police”. He then opened the front door where the assailant immediately fired several shots in his direction causing his fatal injuryOne, we haven’t established the true motives yet so we wouldn’t want to say at this early point in the investigation what we believe. What we will do and we have done already is put measures into place as to stop any retaliation from his group. Like I said at this point, at this time we do not know the true identity of the assailant but we have everything in place to prevent any form of retaliation. We have several persons detained for questioning and as soon as the investigators believe they have enough information to release then I will be at liberty to release.”

Notably, in 2020, Hinds and another man were charged with the murder of 5-year-old Kia Herbert. In May of that year, the minor was shot and killed as she slept inside her Pitter Street home.
