Belize City Vendor Faces Assault Charge Following Heated Political Argument

An argument over United States politics turned into an assault charge after one man allegedly spit in the face of the other earlier this week. Popular Belize City herbs vendor, 63-year-old Leroy Young appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, charged with a single count of common assault to which he pleaded not guilty. He was granted bail in the sum of two hundred dollars plus one surety of the same amount. He is due back in court on August 9. The complainant, thirty-eight-year-old Joshua Rivero reported to police that he was at his stall at the Michael Finnegan Market on Friday, June 28, when she struck up a conversation with Young about the debate between former US President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden. Rivero says that after the heated argument, Young left but came back and spit in his face, and he decided to report the matter to police.
