
Belize Government Clerk Charged with Stealing $4,500+ from Treasury

A clerk employed by the Government of Belize has been charged for stealing over four thousand, five hundred dollars. Rona Ireland a clerk at the Treasury Department was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, answering to three counts of theft. The charges stem from three separate incidents; on February 3 she reportedly misappropriate nine hundred and thirty three dollars and thirty three cents from the Treasury. Three months later, on May 4, she misappropriated six hundred dollars, and on May 25 she allegedly took two thousand nine hundred and sixty nine dollars and fifty four cents. Ireland pleaded not guilty to all three counts, and since the police court prosecutor had no objection to bail, she was offered bail in the sum of $2,000 plus two sureties of $1,000 each. Up to four thirty this evening, she had not posted bail. She is to return to court on September 22.
