Commissioner Williams’ Comments on Leadership Style Amid Perception He has Gone Soft

One of the sentiments that have arisen since the attack is the Commissioner’s change in demeanor from a heavy-handed cop to a more reasonable figure. Before taking up the post of Commissioner, Williams was known for his tenacious and fearless personality, which struck fear in the hearts of criminals. However, Williams is no longer seen as the same no-nonsense cop, many believe he has gotten soft. But, according to him, his perceived change has more to do with being respected as a leader than being feared in the streets.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “All the media houses are very aggressive when it comes to information about the police. If you have information about something which is spicy and juicy and you get something about police which is not so spicy and juicy you will leave that juicy information and come to the police because you believe you’re getting more traction from that, that’s just how the media operates. Again I must say that I am a creature of law. Whilst the criminals operate without any rules I have to operate within rules and I have to operate within the scope of the law. So as much as yes from my personal feeling my personal standpoint I would love to do certain things I cannot do that if it is not going to be done in accordance with the law so I remain a law abiding citizen. I am the chief law enforcement officer of the country I must abide by the laws and so whatever needs to be done in dealing with any criminal elements I will always ensure it is done in accordance with with the law and again things that used to happen back in the days I have grown, I have become wiser over the years I must say that and I have also learned to become more compliant with rules and regulations if I want to lead an organization like the police I have to lead by example. I cannot lead my officers to believe that to be out there and abusing the rights of people is the right thing to do, I cannot do that no.”

While Williams admits he no longer encourages a heavy-handed approach to fighting crime, he denies being soft and says his focus remains on making the country a safer place for its citizens.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: I believe I’m very aggressive. I don’t think I am soft and as you said the criminal elements do fear me still. There is no doubt about that because they know that once I say I will do something I will do it. And so there is still that degree of fear but we do have some young people who are growing up today who obviously they’re just idle and they don’t give a damn. What we need to do is to make sure we identify those persons and we go after them and that’s what we have been doing. I believe we have been extremely tough on criminals under my administration as the Commissioner of Police. Yes I have to a great extent withheld my police officers from being abusive because I don’t think we have to be abusive to be able to achieve our goals of keeping our country safe and reducing crime.”

Williams assumed the position of Commissioner of Police in January 2019.
