EU and OAS Sign Cooperation Agreement to Bolster Peace Between Belize and Guatemala

Several diplomats gathered at the western border this afternoon where a cooperation agreement was signed between the European Union (EU) and the Organization of American States (OAS).  The agreement focuses on improving peace between Belize and Guatemala through funding that will support the OAS’ efforts in both nations, as they work to resolve the long-standing differendum, currently before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The terms were cemented today at a ceremony held at the office of the OAS in the Belize/Guatemala Adjacency Zone. Under the agreement, the EU through its offices in Belize and Guatemala will provide a total of 3 million Euros to the OAS to implement projects in both nations. Ambassador of the EU to Belize, Mariannie Van Steen, says the venture underscores the importance of both nations working together to improve their relationship and strengthen peace in the region.

Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amalia Mai, noted that the proposal will prepare the OAS for the results of the ICJ’s ruling. She explained that the organization will ensure that both countries work together in areas of mutual concern to benefit both Belize and Guatemala.

Also in attendance at today’s ceremony were Ambassador Agustín Espinosa, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the Belize/Guatemala Affairs and Guatemala’s Ambassador to Belize, Carlos Garcia.
