Foreign Minister Clarifies Observer Mission to Venezuela

Minister of Foreign Affairs Francis Fonseca has clarified that the observer mission that headed to Venezuela for the General Elections were not sent by the Government of Belize. The two-member team that visited Venezuela on July 28 was comprised of Belize’s Chief Elections Officer, Josephine Tamai, and Cesar Ross Director of the Good Governance Unit. Fonseca said, however, that the government is monitoring the situation in Venezuela in hopes that the will of the people will be reflected in the results.

The elections in Venezuela were highly controversial, with violent riots popping up over the country during the process. Reports are that as many as 20 people died during those protests
