Former Gang Boss Fatally Shot in Belize City on Good Friday

A former gang boss was gunned down in Belize City on Good Friday. Around 4:30 a.m., Clay Monsanto was fatally shot near his home on McKay Boulevard in the Lake Independence area. Monsanto was targeted by two men on a motorcycle, who let off several shots at him. Monsanto attempted to escape and into his home but collapsed. Monsanto was no stranger to the police and was a key gang figure in the late 90’s. In 2004, Monsanto fled Belize but was charged in absentia for the murder of William Staine Jr. He was a person of interest in several other violent crimes but escaped charges. He was recently deported to Belize after spending time in a US prison. Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero says police are yet to ascertain a motive for the murder.

ACP Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding, Eastern Division: “Investigation revealed that Clay was in his yard when he was approached by a male person who fired several shots towards him causing his fatal injuries. We are seeking several suspects in regards to this murder. We are following up on several leads and several motives but we have not narrowed down exactly what was the cause for this murder. Yes we have dealt with him in the past and the information we have that this person was brought there by another male person on a motorcycle and after the shooting they both fled from the area.”

Monsanto was also once a leader of the Ghost Town Crips.
