Garifuna Heritage Foundation Launches Reparations Working Group

The Garifuna Heritage Foundation has announced the launch of the Garifuna Reparations Working Group. The group was created with an aim to repair over 500 years of suppression that was endured by indigenous people due to European Colonization of the Americas, as well as the invasion across Africa and Asia. The members of the Reparations Working Group are ten individuals who are described in the media release as being, “committed to the concept of reparatory justice.” The foundation expects the working group to develop recommendations based on appropriate research. It is the intention of TGHF to inform and educate Garifuna/ Indigenous people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Central America (Belize, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua) and the United States on the issues relevant to the reparations. One of the group’s upcoming events, is the eleventh international Garifuna 2-day conference, scheduled for March 11, 2024.
