Government Faces Challenges in Human Trafficking Fight

The Government of Belize continues to face significant challenges in its fight against human trafficking. A key component of the government’s strategy is ensuring that victims are not penalized for unlawful acts committed as a direct result of being trafficked. Formal procedures will be consistently applied to screen for and identify victims among vulnerable groups. However, that may be difficult given that a recent US Report showed that officials in Belize were complicit in the trafficking of persons. Minister of Human Development, Dolores Balderamos Garcia coneced that it is a concern that the government is working on.

Although the country has made strides, the recent report highlights areas where further efforts are essential to meet the minimum standards for elimination of trafficking. Garcia further spoke about  GOB’s bid to combat trafficking effectively.

Belize remains in Tier 2, recognizing the progress made and the need for continued commitment to eradicating human trafficking.
