Government Settles Out of Court With Businessman Aaron Wilson

Businessman Aaron Wilson says the Government of Belize has settled out of court with him over a claim stemming from his arrest and charge for boisterous behavior at the Ladyville Police Station in 2024.  Wilson, who spoke to reporters outside the High Court this morning, confirmed that the matter was resolved without going to trial. While he declined to disclose the amount of the settlement, Wilson stressed that the case was never about money, but about justice and closure.

Speaking after the settlement, Wilson said he is relieved the matter has come to an end and grateful for what he described as a just outcome.

The claim arose from an incident on March 8, 2024, when Wilson was detained, charged, and later summoned to court for boisterous behavior, charges that were never prosecuted. On the day he was scheduled to appear in the Magistrate’s Court, no information or complaint was filed, and he was never arraigned.  Wilson subsequently filed a claim through his attorney, Norman Rodriguez, alleging unlawful detention, malicious prosecution, and trespass to his person. The claim named the Attorney General, the then Commissioner of Police, and PC Shaneeka Hoare, the officer who made the original allegation.  Wilson alleged that he was detained without lawful justification after peacefully visiting the police station to inquire about the status of his employee. He further claimed that the incident caused him financial loss, emotional distress, and harm to his business.
