Five electric buses will be placed on the highways in the coming months as part of the government’s plan to modernize the transportation sector. The pilot project is aimed at gathering the necessary data on electronic buses to finalize policies and regulations governing the official use of electronic vehicles. On Friday, Minister of Transport Rodwell Ferguson provided an update on the project and says that final preparations are being made for the arrival of the buses.

Rodwell Ferugson, Minister of Transport: “If you notice the world is growing renewable energy and by 2030 there should be a significant change in the type of motor vehicles that we have across the world. As a matter of fact, I believe the combustion engine will soon become obsolete and Belize will be forced to follow suit. I just came back from Jamaica last week for a conference of renewable energy and transportation is a key sector because in Belize, 46.8% of the emissions is caused by transportation so we have to follow suit.”
Reporter: So electric buses are coming, but do you believe that Belize’s roads are adequate enough to maintain these buses?
Rodwell Ferugson, Minister of Transport: “Electric buses are all over the world in particular some of the Caribbean countries already and so I believe Belize have upgraded their road situation over the last 10 years significantly. So we are prepared for it.”
