A sitting of the House of Representatives is scheduled for tomorrow morning, starting at eleven thirty. It was highly speculated that tomorrow would have been the day when the date for the general election would have been announced by the Prime Minister. It turns out, however, that will not happen. What will happen in tomorrow’s meeting will be the introduction of six bills to the House. Perhaps, the most curious of those Bills is the National Assembly (Powers, Privileges, and Immunities) Bill, 2025. It is a Bill that essentially gives protection to those in the house when it comes to freedom of speech, immunities, powers and privileges. We are yet to see the bill in detail, but it does make you question the need for a repeal of the Legislative Assembly (Powers and Privileges) Act. A second bill of interest is the Bill for an Act to prescribe the National Symbols of Belize; to regulate the use of the National Symbols of Belize. This Bill now restricts the wanton use, publication or print of the country’s national symbols. The Bill outlines the exact colors and design of the Belize flag, and now requires that a license be acquired for the commercial use of these symbols. Once this Bill is passed, businesses that use the picture of the flag or any national symbol would then have six months to acquire a license for the continued use. Tomorrow’s house meeting will also see as many as thirteen loan motions come to the house with a majority of them having to do with amendments to loan motions with the Republic of China (Taiwan). Other loan motions include the 58 point two million US dollar loan for the Belize Reliant and Resilient Energy System Project; the 23 point five million US dollars for the Belize Blue Cities and Beyond Project; the 17 point five million US dollars for the Expansion and Rehabilitation of the Philip Goldson Highway; and the six point two million dollars from the Caribbean Development Bank on behalf of the Belize Electricity Limited. Love News will be following the presentations in the House and will report accordingly.
