A group of Mayan NGOs have come together to distribute relief supplies to families in over thirty villages affected by the recent forest fires. The Julian Cho Society, Toledo Alcaldes Association, Maya Leaders Alliance, and other partners, teamed up over the past few weeks to deliver thousands of food items to over three hundred and seventy families. Christina Coc, spokesperson for the Toledo Alcalde Association (TAA) and the Maya Leaders Alliance (MLA) said that the organizations conducted assessments following the fires and determined that food security was a priority for affected families.
Phase one of the project saw the distribution of twenty-two thousand pounds of corn, four thousand four hundred pounds of beans, four thousand four hundred pounds of flour, four thousand four hundred pounds of rice, and two thousand two hundred pounds of brown sugar. Coc said the support will continue in tandem with phase two, which aims to have farmers replant lost crops.
Coc said that the fires are a part of the increasing challenges that the county is facing due to climate change and that farmers will need to adjust their agrarian practices to face those challenges.
