Mayor Trapp Rescinds Call to Expel Faber, Calls for Unity in UDP

Only days after wanting Patrick Faber expelled from the UDP, Mayor Earl Trapp rescinded his request and confirmed that he has since had a change of heart.  Today, his call is not for Faber’s removal, but for unity at its National Party Council meeting slated for tomorrow. IT was only last Friday that Trapp fired off the letter calling for Patrick Faber’s expulsion after Faber posted on Facebook about wanting Shyne Barrow gone as the party’s leader. Trapp had expressed a need for Faber to be removed, but, on Wednesday, Trapp pulled back. The move came two days before the UDP’s NPC meeting, where an apparent attempt will be made to unseat Barrow, sparking concerns about whether Trapp’s move has ulterior motives. However, he says both letters sought to bring unity within the UDP. Trapp spoke to Love News about the recent development and why he wanted Faber removed in the first place.

Earl Trapp, Mayor of San Ignacio/Santa Elena: “I use that opportunity to reach out to all the leaders, for them to reflect then and say, you know what, we cannot continue in this light. I believe that the letter that I sent to rescind the first is basically just to say that we need each other. We have thousands of supporters that have been there for us. Thousands and thousands of supporters that are suffering and we cannot continue to quarrel amongst ourselves and forget the poor people that have been there for us. So that’s the light that I was trying to shed to my colleagues that we cannot cut off our nose to spite our faces. We cannot continue with the crab in a barrel syndrome or blue concas syndrome. We have to be caring for each other and if we can learn to quarrel within and at the end of the day put differences behind us in the best interest of our people, in the best interest of the party, in the best interest of the country moving forward then I believe that is what we need. So I was just trying to send that message that we have to do more in terms of caring for our party and for our people. And I believe and I hope that the message was, I mean, it was properly met by them and I hope that by tomorrow we should be able to come up with an amicable solution and move forward.”

Trapp told the UDP Chairman that he had received calls and texts from several UDP members to desist from his attempt to remove Faber. Our newsroom asked him whether that meant he had been pressured into retracting the letter.

Earl Trapp, Mayor of San Ignacio/Santa Elena: “People will always try to taint one’s character because right after that someone asked me how much they paid me to send that letter. My God, nobody, I don’t do that. But one of the, I will tell you as well, one of the reasons why and I quoted it on the letter, on the rescinding letter is because I received a lot of calls from many UDP supporters who believe that the matter could have been handled different and without having to think about taking out Mr. Faber. You know, and they said as well that, remember I support Mr. Faber as well, I like him and if you continue like this then you don’t have our support anymore. And I think that is another factor that prompted me to send the, we send the letter. And it’s not one, it’s many people that called me, text me with that concern that, Mr. I don’t like how Mr. Faber was, you’re trying to expel Mr. Faber and he has been there for so many, and you know what? I believe, I believe so. I think, I mean, we are all humans and we make mistakes and I think we just have to find the correct way of addressing situations before we just react to certain things. We have to digest it properly and see how it could affect us as a people, how it could affect us as a party, and before we make the best informed decision. So yes, in that light I did, I had to respond and to rescind it because of the fact that so many UDP supporters were very concerned about me writing that letter. So it was very imperative that I do it.”

Trapp also recently supported a proposal to replace John Saldivar as the UDP’s Western Regional Leader, but Saldivar resigned before the matter could have been discussed.
