Minister Involved in Road Traffic Incident, Sustains Minor Injuries

Minister of Sustainable Development and Climate Change, and Cayo Northeast Area Representative, Orlando Habet was involved in a road traffic incident this morning. According to reports, the incident happened near Georgeville on the George Price Highway and involved Habet’s SUV and a delivery truck. The minister was reportedly making a left turn when the other vehicle attempted to overtake, subsequently hitting Habet’s vehicle, causing it to overturn.  Minister Habet received minor injuries, and was able to speak to Correspondent Elaine Berry.

Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development: “I was going towards Georgeville to pick up one of my colleagues who works there from the Forest Department who lives in Georgeville. Our plan was to go up to the Chiquibul this morning so I wanted to reach there for about 9:30 where we would have left from the Forest Station in Mountain Pine Ridge to the Chiquibul. I passed about 8:20 or so I guess and I was going in to pick up this officer. I looked at my rearview mirror the middle rearview mirror and didn’t see anybody behind me and I signaled to turn left and when I turned I felt the slamming on the side of the door or near the door really. And I felt and saw the vehicle flip so upon landing I realized I was sort of hanging and then I realized I was hanging because of the seatbelt. So I removed the seatbelt and crawled out through the back window. So fortunately for me I am okay. I came to the hospital to get some vitals to be checked and do some x rays and according to the doctor everything is okay. So I have been given the all clear to be able to go home. I also checked on the other person who was in the accident in the other vehicle and thank God he is also okay.”

Our newsroom understands that Habet has denied responsibility for the traffic incident.
