Opposition Leader Slams Government’s Budget as Betrayal: Says GOB’s budget not in tune with the people

Ahead of tomorrow’s budget debate for the 2023/2024 fiscal year, the Leader of the Opposition, Moses “Shyne” Barrow, is expressing concern over what he says is a duplicitous showing by the government.   Barrow has labeled the budget as, ‘A stay-off-track betrayal budget”.  He says the Briceno Administration’s allocation of public finances goes against the People’s United Party’s foundation of social justice, and that the government is not putting enough funds into welfare programs and initiatives to alleviate poverty. Barrow spoke to our newsroom about some of the salient points in his speech for tomorrow, and why he believes the government is not listening to the citizens’ concerns.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “I had joked before in the House that you know I was a professional entertainer and as far as being a musician and artist, writer, performer. But I actually wrote and sung about the truth, didn’t do much exaggeration or didn’t do much fantasy writing at all. I was what they call one of the real rappers. But this government led by John Briceno is like a Vanilla Ice or one of the fake – I believe there was a movie parody called MC Malibu, that’s who John Briceno reminds me of when he allows his speech writers, because you know he talks about the Belizean people having limited ability – no one is more challenged than he and you look at the first pages of his budget speech where it is either him being willfully dishonest and deliberately misleading the people of this nation when he says that his government in three years halved the debt from 132% of GDP to sixty odd. That is just not true, it was at 103% and now it is a sixty odd and that 103 was as a result of the pandemic, COVID-19. If you go back to let’s say 2014 where our debt to GDP was at about 62% the projection for this year is 59%. So you’re talking 2%. The reason I highlight this if you keep lying to yourself and lying to the Belizean people then we will not be able to get ahead.”

Barrow went on to say that he believes the budget is not geared toward growing the economy and increasing the country’s social safety net.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “But certainly we have a vision as the next government as to the things that we would do, the areas that need improvement nationwide in our public health sector and as I said if we were the government the additional monies would not be spent in the areas that they’re being spent. You don’t see that additional $100 million going to human development. You see the same $3 million dollars that they have been giving to the food program, no increase. Yet we have all conceded we’re dealing with inflation. Inflation is not going away. The cost of living is not being reduced. The working class is being pushed to the margins. Those that have already been below the poverty line it is even worse for them. So what we should see is a government that is responding to the demands of the day and this budget does not reflect that. We should see that $3 million for food pantry, food packages, we should see that go to $9 million or at least double to $7 million. We don’t see these types of improvement and we don’t see any poverty alleviation at the level we had it under the UDP Barrow administration when this government I call it the stay off track budget of betrayal because this is George Price’s party no more.”

We’ll have a full breakdown of the speeches of tomorrow’s budget debate.
