The Leader of the Opposition, Tracy Panton, has issued a scathing critique of the Prime Minister’s State of the Nation Address, labeling it a “lame” and “hollow” speech that failed to address the most critical issues facing the country. While extending congratulations to the 44 new citizens welcomed on the 44th Independence Anniversary, she stated that the address was notable for its “stark omissions.”
According to Panton, the Prime Minister’s speech said “nothing about the issues most critical to the daily lives of Belizeans.” The response highlighted a long list of unresolved problems, including the “spiraling cost of living,” which is pushing many families to the brink of poverty; high fuel prices despite low global crude prices; and the “unbearable weight of taxation” on working Belizeans.
Panton also pointed to a “failing public health system,” “unregulated housing costs,” and “skyrocketing rental fees.” Her statement addressed a lack of housing solutions for the poor and affordable mortgage access for minimum-wage earners. In matters of governance and security, the Opposition Leader spoke of “rogue elements” in security services and “rampant corruption and cronyism.” She also addressed Belize’s sovereignty, stating that the country’s “sovereignty and territorial integrity are under siege” and that “international agreements are being signed in secrecy.”
Panton concluded by asserting that the Prime Minister chose to remain silent on these matters because his administration has “no credible plan to address them.” She stated that the “Briceno government is unraveling under the weight of its own self-inflicted failures” and that “no spin, no speech, and no ‘Report Card’ can hide the plain and unadulterated truth.”
