The People’s United Party’s Secretariat has announced that there are only a few days left to apply to run in the upcoming municipal elections. Deputy Secretary General, Collet Montejo spoke on the application process, saying that the Party reserves the right to reject any applications. Montejo did allude that those who went against the party at some point, or who had some negative brush with the law, will not be entertained or accepted.
Collet Montejo, Deputy Secretary General: “We have until the 4th of August for those who wish to apply to be on the PUP ticket for any of the nine municipalities nationally. We’ve already expressed the fact that applicants must apply in person. It’s not like you could send your application. One of the things that we highlight is, and the reason for that is you have to check where the person is registered. You have to check that they’re registered. You’ve got to verify that they, in fact, don’t have a police record. And there are other knick-knacks along the way. And we also try to explain to all individuals that your application is just that. It’s not an entitlement. Not because you apply that means you will be a candidate even for a convention. All right? Because the party reserves the right to accept or deny any application, any applicant. And there is a vetting committee that will be established that goes through these applications also. And there are some individuals in various municipalities who were not, didn’t listen to good advice from the party and ran their own rogue system, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera, who, in the best interest of themselves, the party will say to them, don’t apply. All right? They might have had confrontations with the law along the way. Don’t apply, because your application will not be considered. So it’s important that everybody understands that if you are going to apply, you need to do so in person and we will, at that point in time, express to you if there’s already a determination in relation to some applicants that we will not accept your application.”
Montejo further explained that every final acceptance of applicants will be made by the PP’s National executive.
Collet Montejo, Deputy Secretary General: “Once your application is accepted, it’s not a right to. All right? It still has to go through a vetting process and a final determination still has to be made at the national executive level as it relates to every single applicant. And we say it’s silly season because if you have more applicants accepted than positions on any particular slates then the party will have to determine whether we have conventions or whether we sit down with candidates to try to resolve matters, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. So we are in the meat of that and August the 4th at 4pm is the closing date. Anybody, you can’t apply after August 4th and think you’ll be considered. As a matter of fact your application won’t be accepted. Full stop.”
The deadline to apply to enter the municipal elections as a PUP supporter is August 4.
