Phone Theft Suspect Unwittingly Targets Police Officer, Granted Bail

When 50-year-old Martin Carcamo decided to snatch an unsuspecting woman’s phone, he had no idea that his victim was a police officer. Carcamo appeared in the Belize City Magistrates Court today, charged with a single count of theft. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of eight hundred dollars plus one surety of the same amount. He is due back in court on August 13. Police Corporal, 28-year-old Georgina Bartley, reported that she was buying breakfast at a stall in the Michael Finnegan Market yesterday and set her phone down. Carcamo entered the stall sometime after she did and left shortly after. That’s when she noticed that her phone was missing. She followed him and asked if he had her phone and he denied it at first. Once Bartley told him she was a police officer, Carcamo returned the phone to her.
