Prime Minister John Briceno has responded to Belmopan Mayor Sharon Palacio calling him racist. Last night, in an interview, Palacio said she believes one hundred percent that the PM was racist and misogynistic towards her. Last month, the council was once again at odds over Palacio disregarding the government’s position and appointing Hope Amadi as Deputy Mayor in her absence. PM Briceno had stated that the council’s constant infighting and bickering is an embarrassment to the government, which triggered Palacio’s comments. However, PM Briceno says he was not directly targeting Palacio and doesn’t take her comments to heart.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “I find it kind of humerus that I’d be accused that I’m that but that’s fine. I mean that’s alright. I think that what she did not realize, I was not criticizing her. I mean when I say this is an embarrassment I was referring to the council everything that’s taking place in the council and it includes the councilors and herself and the whole comportment of the members of the council of course it is an embarrassment to everybody. But for her to say that because I said that I’m racists well I mean that’s her right so I don’t take it personal.”
The leader of the Opposition has also weighed in on Palacio’s comments, saying that he doesn’t believe the PM is racist but is a bad leader.
