PM Briceno weighs in on Belmopan City Council situation

The Municipal Elections are four months away, and for the main political parties the slates have been finalized, and it is now known who will be running for which party. For the People’s United Party (PUP) two current mayors who will not be running next year are Charles Selgado of Punta Gorda and Belmopan’s Sharon Palacio. The situation with Mayor Palacio had involved some testy exchanges and somewhat scandalous posts on social media. Prime Minister John Briceno has commented on the situation, coining it as unfortunate.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “It is unfortunately because I do believe that Mayor Palacio is a woman with a lot of talents. I mean she has been a teacher, university. She was a councilor back then in the first Belmopan City Council along with then Mayor Chanona but for some reason it seems that she was having problems from day one with her council or certain members or one time she’s happy with this crowd the next so on and back and forth. So I think it’s probably an issue of management but I do not question whether she wanted to do some good work for Belmopan but for whatever reasons here we are that she’s not running again.”
