PM says Government Working to Find Solution to Prevent Bread Price Hike

From sugar to bread, the government is working to prevent an uptick in the controlled price of sixteen-ounce sliced bread. Last week, the Baker’s Association announced an increase in the price but was stopped by GOB. The bakers have been requesting an increase for months and say they are at a breaking point. The Ministry of Agriculture was to submit a Cabinet paper to deter the 85-cent uptick but was unable to so do. Prime Minister John Briceno says GOB is now exploring various avenues to please both consumers and the association.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “The reality is and we can’t be upset with the bakers, the prices of their materials or their supplies has gone up. The price of flour has gone up, the price of the lard and all that they use, the yeast and everything that they use has really gone up. And so again we believe that we’re trying to do our best and we’ve been doing it from day one so we’re finding a way how is it that we can subsidize a part of is that we can keep bread at where it is and avoid a price increase for the time being.”
